Warning Signs Your Starting or Charging System Needs Attention

Arrange an inspection when you notice:

Starter Motor and No-Crank Diagnosis

A vehicle that clicks, cranks slowly or does not crank may have a starter motor fault, but several other problems can produce the same symptoms.

Possible causes include:

Battery Drain and Repeated Flat Batteries

A vehicle that repeatedly needs charging or jump-starting may have a parasitic battery drain rather than a failed battery.

A parasitic drain occurs when an electrical component continues using excessive power after the ignition has been switched off.

Possible causes include:

  • An accessory wired incorrectly
  • A relay remaining switched on
  • A control module failing to enter sleep mode
  • An interior, glovebox or luggage-compartment light remaining on
  • A damaged door, bonnet or tailgate switch
  • Water entry affecting wiring or electrical components

Battery-drain testing may require the vehicle to remain at the workshop. Many modern vehicles continue operating control modules for a period after shutdown, so the system may need time to enter its normal sleep state before current draw can be measured accurately.

Does a flat battery mean I need a new battery?

Not always. A flat battery may be caused by a charging fault, poor connection, short-trip operation, accessory problem or parasitic electrical drain. The battery and charging system should be tested before replacement is recommended.

Can you test an alternator before replacing it?

Yes. Testing may include battery condition, charging voltage, available output, drive-belt condition and voltage drop through the charging circuit.

Why does my car click but not start?
